SHOP WALMART ~ SUPPORT MARRIAGE

Some gay advocacy group has called for a boycott of Walmart because they don't give benefits to housemates and gay partners --just to hetero- married couples. They want us to shop Target instead.

So the American Family Association has suggested we be sure to support Walmart this Christmas and suggested the stores evaluate the difference in their December revenue to see which agenda is more popular with Americans --the pro-family or the pro-gay agenda. [source: AFA via email]

American education continues to participate in the fight against traditional marriage in America. In California, the legislature passed a law that the schools must observe their new definition of "family" to chidren as young as 5 (k-12) and that they must say nothing about the pro-traditional-marriage view. That would be hate speech, I assume. [Source: Citizen magazine, current issue]

Citizen magazine also reports that there is a respectable university study that gives favorable evaluation of ex-gay reality --and Exodus ministry. They say there are many ex-gays, re-oriented, and others who are living by Biblical standards, and some who were not converted by Exodus, etc. but that no one could prove harm to themselves by the ministry.

Barb, thought you should consider a few things before you decide to endorse WalMart, strictly out of your principals regarding same-sex marriage. While I fully support you having the right to your own viewpoint, I wonder if you can't find a more substantial way to support your cause other than by simply...shopping. WalMart is not going to put that money towards your cause or your agenda. If you want to really support your cause in a financial way, why not donate to a candidate that supports your viewpoint? I suggest you research WalMart a little further before committing to using them to get your message across. Are they really committed to Christian Values as you are? What would Jesus have thought of their business practices? To get you started, I thought I might provide a few quick facts...

1) A recent study by researchers at UC Berkeley's Labor Center has quantified what happened to retail wages when Wal-Mart set up shop, drawing on 15 years of data on actual store openings. The study found that Wal-Mart drives down wages in urban areas, with an annual loss of at least $4.7 billion dollars in earnings for retail workers.

Source: Arindrajit Dube, "Impact of Wal-Mart Growth on Earnings throughout the Retail Sector in Urban and Rural Counties" UC Berkeley Labor Center, November 2005.

2) Wal-Mart currently faces lawsuits in thirty-one different States for wage and hour abuses potentially involving hundreds of thousand workers.

Source: Wal-Mart Stores 10K Filing, March 31, 2005, Pg. 16, Item 3.

3)Wal-Mart is paying eleven million dollars to settle Federal allegations it used illegal immigrants to clean its stores.

Source: CNN/Money, "Wal-Mart Pays $11M Over Illegal Labor," CNN.com, March 18, 2005.

4)What taxpayers put into WalMart does not come back. Taken in the context of Wal-Mart's taxpayer costs, Wal-Mart's per store charitable contributions do not match up to the amount of money a store takes in the "numerous forms of public assistance--Medicaid, Food Stamps, public housing--that often allow workers to subsist on Wal-Mart's low wages. A report by the House Education and Workforce Committee conservatively places [public assistance costs] at $420,750 per store; the Wal-Mart Foundation's per-store charitable giving is just 11 percent of the amount given to them by taxpayers ($47,222)."

Source: Liza Featherstone, "On The Wal-Mart Money Trail,", The Nation, November 21, 2005.

5)WalMart is currently embattled in the largest employment lawsuit is U.S. history. Specifically, this discrimination case is a class action lawsuit involving some 2 MILLION current and past female employees of the company who claim that WalMart pays lower wages and gives fewer pro to women. The Federal Appeals Court said, “Expert opinions, factual evidence, statistical evidence and anecdotal evidence present significant proof of a corporate policy of discrimination."

I know we have very different viewpoints on the world, Barb. I sincerely respect that you are excersing your right to free speech and encourage debate. I am not trying to get you to see my viewpoint on same-sex marriage, only to make sure you have some information regarding Wal Mart's business practices before you endorse them. Do they really reflect your views?

Peace be with you,
Tom White

I wonder if Walmart employs a lot of people who other people won't employ --who are happy because of that.

Because I understand that some people LIKE working for Walmart.

But their low prices are what hurts other stores, right?

I like high wages and low prices --can they co-exist in the same company?

I don't know that much about it.

But I do believe it is absurd to give benefits to anyone other than married couples as a recognition of the male-female unit that is natural --and best for children.

New research is out to say that live-in couples --non-traditional couples --are most often the child-abuse relationships.

We need to restore respect and status for hetero marriage where children are best raised. And we need to improve our hetero-marriages --nothing does that better than the Biblical teaching church.

Gosh, who'd believe that?

I shop at Walmart Food Center because I save about $50 a week compared to the overpriced King that is Kroger.

And, if I can support traditional marriage while doing it...its that much better.

UC Berkeley a source for anything?

Nearly all major corporations hire
low-wage employees, and elderly retired that need extra money to survive.

They also limit these people to
no more than 20 hrs per week, to
avoid paying normal "benefits".

To Single Out Wal-Mart, is to
dodge reality. It's the bottom-line
Corporate Mentality. I was employed
until 78, enjoyed the 20 hours.

Now at 82, I blog; keeps me sharp! reb
